In his book "Spare," Prince Harry reminisces about a thoughtful gift his wife Meghan gave him during their first holiday season in 2020 after stepping down from their senior royal roles. The Royal Family has a tradition of favoring humorous and thoughtful gifts over expensive ones, and Harry and Meghan have continued this custom even after moving to the US.
Prince Harry recalls that Meghan found a Christmas tree ornament with a picture of the Queen on it at a local shop and thought he would appreciate it. He did, saying he "roared" with laughter when he opened it and immediately placed it on their tree at Archie’s eye-level.
He wrote: "One present was a little Christmas ornament of… the Queen! I roared. What the—? Meg had spotted it in a local store and thought I might like it. I held it to the light. It was Granny’s face to a T! I hung it on an eye-level branch. It made me happy to see her there."
Unfortunately, the sweet present didn’t last long. Archie, like any curious toddler, found the tree irresistible and managed to pull the decoration off, causing it to shatter.
"But then Archie, playing around the tree, jostled the stand, shook the tree, and Granny fell. I heard a smash and turned. Pieces lay all over the floor," Harry wrote in "Spare," adding that Archie tried to help fix the situation.
"Archie ran and grabbed a spray bottle. For some reason, he thought spraying water on the broken pieces would fix it," he wrote.
"Meg said: 'No, Archie, no — do not spray Gan-Gan!' I grabbed a dustpan and swept up the pieces all the while thinking: 'This is weird.'"
Even after stepping back from their royal roles in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to release official Christmas cards, just like King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Kate, and Prince William do each year.
The couple spent Christmas 2019 in a secluded house in Vancouver, which they decorated with an eight-foot tall Christmas tree adorned with warm fairy lights and golden baubles. Meghan and Harry marked Christmas 2020 with a stunning festive picture. It showed them with little Archie in their garden, standing outside a Wendy house. Their two dogs are also in the shot, along with a small tree decorated with a huge red bow.
