Jennifer Gray says the fatal car crash with Matthew Broderick is among the 'top 3 traumas' in her life: 'I thought I was dead'

Jennifer Gray recalled the 1987 car accident in which she and Matthew Broderick were involved and in which two women were killed.
Grey, 62, spoke about the incident in an interview with Entertainment Tonight's Paige Gawley published Thursday following the release of her new memoir "Out of the Corner." She wrote in the memoir that the car accident happened a few weeks before the premiere of "Dirty Dancing" while the couple was driving together in Ireland.
"The car accident in Ireland was, she would say, one of the top three traumas of my life, maybe the first," Gray told ET. "It's very difficult to describe when you have a near-death experience and you're present at other people's deaths. Being alone on a country road in the middle of nowhere, with no one else around or aware, was pretty scary."

Gray went on to say that the car accident caused "a lot of other things" in her life.
"I was the only living witness because Matthew had survived, but he was unconscious and had amnesia and was very seriously injured. I thought he was dead," Gray told ET, adding that she initially didn't realize there were deaths.
"I didn't even know there were two other women who were tragically killed at the time. It's something you don't come back from in the same way," Gray said.
Gray also defended Broderick, who was driving the vehicle, adding that they were sober at the time of the accident.
"He didn't have any information that people seemed to think he had because they wanted an answer and there was no answer because it was an accident," Gray told the outlet. "And [Broderick] was a great driver, and nobody drank. It was just an accident. And it was tragic, and I think about the family in Ireland all the time."

After breaking up with Broderick, Gray dated and got engaged to Johnny Depp that same year before calling it quits nine months later.
"There was some heat. It was a fucking bonfire," Gray told People. "It was literally like, 'Are you kidding me? Are you kidding? I've never seen a guy like that."
She recently opened up about Depp's libel suit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, in an interview with ET.
"All I can say about that trial is that it breaks my heart for everyone involved," Gray told ET. "I just think it's sad and I wish it would be resolved and I wish everyone the best."
